Who We Are

The Ladies of Charity is the oldest Catholic laywoman’s organization in the world. Since it origin in seventeenth century France, the members of the organization have followed the example of their founder, St. Vincent de Paul, in daily prayer and personal service to the poor. Like St. Louise de Mariliac, they have gone quietly about their work of visiting the sick, the poor, the aged and the dying. The Ladies of Charity seek every opportunity to make Christ present in our world by serving the material and spiritual needs of those they meet in daily living. Their gifts of time, self-sacrifice, and perseverance help to bring dignity to each person and to respond with compassion to human misery. The Oakland Country Association of The Ladies of Charity was established in 1965 and has grown from a group of thirty to ver three hundred dedicated women. Every year, tens of thousands of individuals are served by the charitable work of the Ladies of Charity.

What We Do

We operate a Clothes Closet and Food Pantry on the campus of St. Hugo of the Hills Parish, and fill thousands of order presented by social workers who make home visits. The Clothes Closet and Food Pantry also provides Easter and Thanksgiving meals to hundreds of people each year.
In November, we provide roasted and frozen turkeys to the Robert Matchan Nutrition Center for Thanksgiving dinner and for additional meals.
At Christmas, we seek assistance of local schools, clubs, and generous individuals to provide food and toys for hundreds of needy families referred to us by the social workers and local parishes. This huge operation needs help from every member.
Throughout the year, we visit and elderly in nursing homes, assist with bingo, and provide prizes for the winners.
We assist with programs in the homes for the developmentally disabled and help in various ways in crisis pregnancy centers.
Many members generously share their talents by making baby quilts for needy infants and blankets for the chronically ill who are hospitalized.
We provide prayer books and rosaries for the needy children who are receiving their First Communion.
On the first Monday of the month, the 8:30 AM mass is offered at St. Hugo of the Hills Chapel for the intentions of our friends and benefactors and those enrolled in our memorial program.
We have an annual Day of Recollection and Memorial Mass for our deceased members.
We have an annual fundraising event and publish a quarterly newsletter.
All members are urged to participate in our program throughout the year.
